The concept of opposites - Yin and Yang - is at work in this legal look at the kiss. How could it not be? Kiss vs. legality? On the one side is the kiss - the most freewheeling and reckless of things - that sloppy and private act. And on the other side is the legal system. It's a smashing together of soft and hard, loose and tight, creative and technical.I think that Sutton must embrace these traits herself because of her complete ease with the two opposites. She leads us gently - but succinctly - through the many, (who knew there were so many?), instances of the kiss crossing paths with the legal system.
There's the time way back in 1019 when a kiss signified the legal transfer of property to the new owner. Fast forward to the present to find there are statutes in some states that prohibit kissing as an inducement to win election votes.
On a juicier note, in the chapter titled, "Kisses and Guns are Not Wine and Roses," Sutton writes of an incident in 1873 when a man shot a woman for refusing to kiss him. And an emotional reaction is sure to occur when reading the part about inheritance. It seems a kiss is sufficient for determining paternity, even if the kiss is only implied. "A message sending a kiss was sufficient for inheriting the biological father's estate, where the father had written to the mother of the boys, requesting that she `kiss our boys for me.'"
It is a fun and quick read. The Legal Kiss is a reference manual complete. No other sources necessary.

I don't believe libraries would have a hard time marketing this book to their patrons. It basically promotes itself.
